Cheaper options exist: Voxblock is £39.99, and playing a downloaded story through a Bluetooth speaker you already own costs nothing extra. Prices verified August 2026; Yoto and tonies re-checked November 2026. This markdown version carries the summary, FAQ and sources. The Yoto Player at $149.99, or the Yoto Mini at $79.99. Both play the same card library, and a single Yoto card starts at $6.99 against $19.99 for a Tonie figurine. Both also let you record or upload your own audio onto a Make Your Own card, which is the feature most families end up using most. Prices verified November 2026. ### What is the cheapest alternative to a Toniebox? Owning no device at all. A story downloaded to a phone and played through a Bluetooth speaker you already own gives your child the same screen-free audio for the price of the story. Among dedicated devices, Voxblock is the cheapest at £39.99 in the UK, followed by the Yoto Mini at $79.99 and Lunii at $79.90. ### Is there a Toniebox that works without WiFi? Several alternatives never need WiFi at all. Voxblock has no WiFi and no app. Lunii is sold as working "without waves and without screen". TIMIO plays fixed discs offline. hörbert configures over its own local hotspot with no internet connection required, and its WiFi and Bluetooth can each be switched off. The Toniebox itself needs WiFi for setup and for the first play of new content, after which it plays offline. ### Which kids audio players let you upload your own audio? Yoto (Make Your Own cards), tonies (the $9.99 Creative Tonie holds 90 minutes), Lunii (own story recording), hörbert (any MP3 or WAV via SD card) and tigerbox (wildcards) all support your own audio. Voxblock and TIMIO do not: they play only their own proprietary blocks or discs. If you want a grandparent narrating, check this before you buy. ### Is a Toniebox or a Yoto cheaper over three years? Yoto, by a wide margin. Buying one piece of content per month, a Toniebox 2 costs about $850 over three years ($129.99 starter set plus 36 figurines at $19.99). A Yoto Player costs about $510 ($149.99 plus 36 cards at $9.99), and a Yoto Mini about $440. The gap is the content, not the hardware. ### What happened to Jooki? Jooki is gone. Its own site now states the player is no longer available for sale, and Hackaday reported in March 2025 that the company went bankrupt and shut down its servers. Owners were left with hardware that depended on those servers. It is the clearest reason to prefer a player that works offline and accepts your own files. ### Do I need a dedicated audio player for bedtime stories at all? No. The American Academy of Pediatrics guidance on screen time concerns screens, not audio. A phone playing a downloaded story with the screen off, through a cheap Bluetooth speaker, delivers the same listening experience as a $130 box. The real argument for a device is toddler-independent operation, which matters more for daytime play than for bedtime. ## Sources & References ### Manufacturer Pricing (verified August 2026; Yoto and tonies re-checked November 2026) - [Toniebox 2 Starter Sets (tonies US)](https://us.tonies.com/collections/toniebox-2-starter-sets) - [Creative Tonie: upload 90 minutes of your own audio (tonies US)](https://us.tonies.com/products/diy-creative-tonie) - [Yoto Player 4th Gen (Yoto US)](https://us.yotoplay.com/players/yoto-player-4) - [Yoto Mini (Yoto US)](https://us.yotoplay.com/yoto-mini) - [Make Your Own Cards, 5-pack (Yoto US)](https://us.yotoplay.com/products/make-your-own-cards-5-pack) - [Voxblock Player](https://voxblock.co.uk/products/voxblock-player) - [Lunii: My Fabulous Storyteller](https://lunii.com/en-us/products/ma-fabrique-a-histoires-bilingue) - [TIMIO Player Starter Kit](https://timio.co/products/timio-player-starter-kit) - [hörbert 3.0 (hörbert.com)](https://www.hoerbert.com/kaufen/hoerbert/) - [tigerbox TOUCH PLUS (tiger.media)](https://tiger.media/products/tigerbox-touch-plus) - [Storypod is now Eddi (rebrand notice)](https://www.storypod.com/pages/storypod-is-now-eddi) ### Discontinued Products & Platform Risk - [Jooki: no longer available for sale (official site notice)](https://jooki.com/) - [Can Hackers Bring Jooki Back To Life?
