What Is Perchance, Exactly?

Perchance.org is not a bedtime story company. It is a community platform where anyone can build and publish a "generator": a small tool that produces random or AI-generated text and images. It started as a hobbyist site for random tables (character names, plot hooks, tabletop RPG loot) and later added free AI text and image generation that any community generator can use.

What You Actually Get: Our July 2026 Test

We gave the generator a classic parent request: "a gentle story about a girl named Mia and a sleepy dragon." A complete story of roughly 500 words streamed in about 30 seconds, paragraph by paragraph, each with its own play button. No account, no payment, no waiting list. That part of the promise is real.

The writing is better than you'd expect

But nobody tuned it for children. The same story casually opened with Mia breaking safety rules because she was "ten and bored" and feeding the dragon tuna "stolen from her father's smokehouse." Nothing scary, but small moments a children's product would catch. There is no age setting, so a 3-year-old and a 12-year-old get the same vocabulary and the same judgment calls.

The "voices" are your device's robot voices

The voice menu sounds impressive until you open it. What you get is your device's built-in text-to-speech: on our Windows test machine, Microsoft David, Mark, and Zira, plus generic entries like "UK English Female" and a dozen other languages. These are the same flat, robotic voices your computer uses to read error messages. There is a speed slider (0.25x to 2.5x), and that is the extent of the audio experience. No warmth, no character voices, and no way to make it sound like you.

Images never arrived, and the music is for dungeon crawls

The images toggle was on for our test. Every paragraph showed "Loading Images..." and after more than two minutes, not one picture had rendered. The feature may work on other days; on ours it simply didn't. The background music menu, meanwhile, is a shared tabletop RPG ambience library: "Soft Gentle Piano" sits in the same list as "Creepy Dungeon", "Cosmic Horror", and "Ancient Evil Awakens". One misclick and your toddler falls asleep to a boss fight.

When the story ends, it's gone

There is no save button, no library, no download. Refresh the page or press "start over" and the story about Mia and Ignis no longer exists. If your child loves it and asks for it again tomorrow (and they will, repetition is how kids process stories), you are retyping the prompt and hoping the AI lands somewhere similar. It won't be the same story.
